Highlights

Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and diverse safari destinations, located in the southern part of the country and covering approximately 3,230 square kilometers. The park forms part of the larger southern ecosystem connected to the famous Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), offering visitors an authentic African safari experience with impressive wildlife and scenic landscapes.

The park is characterized by open grasslands, rolling hills, floodplains, and miombo woodlands that create ideal habitats for a wide variety of animals. Visitors can commonly spot elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, and many other antelope species roaming across the plains. Predators including lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas are also found within the park, though sightings may depend on timing and luck.

Because of its close proximity to Dar es Salaam, Mikumi is a popular choice for both short getaways and extended safari adventures. The park can be reached by road in approximately 4 to 5 hours, while domestic flights are also available to nearby airstrips. Well-maintained game drive tracks make wildlife viewing comfortable and rewarding, especially with experienced guides who help visitors track animals and explain the park’s ecosystems.

Mikumi is also an excellent destination for birdwatching, with over 400 recorded bird species. Visitors may encounter raptors, colorful woodland birds, waterbirds, and seasonal migratory species throughout the year.

Wildlife and Safari Experience

Mikumi National Park supports large populations of herbivores and predators, creating exciting safari opportunities. Herds of elephants, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, and buffaloes are commonly seen grazing on the open plains, while lions often rest beneath acacia trees or survey the grasslands in search of prey.

The park’s open landscape allows for excellent wildlife visibility, making it easier for visitors to observe animals compared to denser forested parks. Bird enthusiasts can also enjoy outstanding sightings throughout the park’s wetlands, plains, and woodlands.

Game Drives

Game drives are the most popular activity in Mikumi National Park. Visitors can explore the park in 4×4 safari vehicles accompanied by professional guides who help locate wildlife and provide detailed knowledge about the flora and fauna.

Walking Safaris

Some safari lodges near the park offer guided walking safaris in surrounding areas outside the main park boundaries. These walks provide a unique opportunity to experience the African bush on foot and learn about smaller wildlife, plants, and animal tracks.

Mikumi National Park is often called the “Mini Serengeti” because of its sweeping plains and rich wildlife populations that resemble the landscapes of Serengeti National Park. Despite being smaller in size, Mikumi offers a classic safari atmosphere with excellent opportunities to see both predators and herbivores in a beautiful open environment.
