Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking

About Mount Kilimanjaro

Also referred as the Roof of Africa or the Crown of Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is both Africa’s highest mountain and the world’s tallest free-standing peak (i.e. it’s standing all by itself in a plain ground, it’s not one peak of many in a mountainous range). Standing at 5,875 meters above sea level, Kilimanjaro is also distinctive as it is located just 330km from the equator. Mount Kilimanjaro comprises of not only one but three volcanic summits. Mawenzi (5,149 m), Shira (3,962 m) the oldest one of the three Kilimanjaro summits is already extinct and the youngest summits Kibo (5,895 m) are dormant volcano and could erupt again in the future.

“We, the people of Tanganyika, would like to light a candle and put it on the top of Mount Kilimanjaro which would shine beyond our borders giving hope where there was despair, love where there was hate and dignity where there was before only humiliation.”- Mwalimu J.K.Nyerere 22nd October 1959

Best time to climb Kilimanjaro

The finest month for climbing is January, February, and September, when the mountain weather is warmer, the skies clearer, and the possibility of rain is less. June, July, and August are also the best time to climb but with close observation of weather, though they tend to be colder as this is ‘winter’ season in Tanzania.
The rainy seasons here in Tanzania especially Kilimanjaro region (March through early June and November or December) are tougher times to climb Kilimanjaro, though it is still possible with appropriate preparation and professional guides.
The popular choice to timing the ascend to summit in the course of the full moon, as the brighter nights improve trail visibility and the moon hanging overhead makes for a spectacular and breath-taking moment when you’re standing atop Mount Kilimanjaro peak, The Roof of Africa.
